Shaun P in the House

His arrival was predicted. Sporting a Starbucks mug and standing beside Sean Lefebvre, he walked into our lives last March and introduced himself with a rich abundance of physical descriptions in many pieces. Exuding an iconic template, we welcomed and studied him with eyes that were steady and penetrating. The smiles we showed, he returned two-fold. We realized the sophistication of this new character named SHAUN KERMAN PATERSON and yes, OSRP’s new General Manager has arrived.

I envision OSRP being a larger business. But more than that I see OSRP being a preferred employer locally. People will be able to say that they’re working for a world-leading business. People will be knocking on our doors to join us,” Shaun excitedly shared in an iNews interview that revealed a great visionary in him.

Well folks, it is easy to expect that he can make this a possibility. A graduate of B.Sc. Computers and Microprocessor Technology, our new GM brings with him a wealth of experiences—highlighted by his strong background in the country’s BPO industry, having worked in a number of capacities with Raytheon, Misys, Fiserv, and Thomson Financial.

Asked about how he landed the GM post, Shaun recalled that a friend told him to consider the OSRP opportunity. Sean, OSRP’s GM back then was on the lookout for someone who’ll take over because he decided to assume the leadership post in Montreal. After a series of interviews with Sean and Frank Khulusi, three months passed without any news about the job. He reached a point where he thought he didn’t get it. That was why he was ecstatic when one day the offer popped up before him. Then Day 1 came.

“My first day was interesting. Throughout the interview period I’d only been into the Conference Room next to the Entrance. I had no idea what the place looked like. I was really excited and Sean made the transition really positive, planned in detail & mapped out for a most effective learning process. First impressions were, “Great place to work, Good decision to join!” Shaun told this writer.

For almost two weeks, we saw the tandem of outgoing General Manager Sean and new GM Shaun undergoing a fairly intensive transition. Now on his sixth week (as of this writing), Shaun is just too happy to share his views about the company.

“OSRP has a pleasant working environment. I’m not aware of too much Office Politics. I’d like to ensure that that doesn’t happen. I want people to be happy to work here. I have an open-door policy and I’d like to see all Managers from Senior level through the Supervisors and Team Leaders work in a similar manner. Communication is a critical requirement for a good working environment,” he said.

After saying all these, this iNews interview of course shifted to a lighter mood. Actually, the chat with Shaun gave us a window on his real personality. Unafraid to share his thoughts and knowing that as a new face he’s a subject of curiosity, he was quick to answer every question. Topping the list was how he learned to speak the Filipino language.

“I began by taking 30hours of lessons at the International Language School in Makati. I also read the Pugad Baboy comic books to help me with some contemporary words and slang. But it’s very difficult to learn Tagalog…I keep asking my friends to speak Tagalog when I’m around to help me learn. My vocabulary is quite big, but I have a hard time constructing sentences!” Shaun shared.

Calling himself a “Starbucks Monster,” he said that he chooses to be a simple person. He named his life’s favorites like when in the Philippines, he craves for Chicken Tinola and El Nido, Palawan as his place for relaxing. Vanilla flavor please for his ice cream, Honey Dipped for his doughnut, and Techno for his music. Yes, techno! “I’m so mad that I missed the DJ Tiesto event recently!” Shaun said.

Apart from work, his interests are bent on traveling, meeting new people and reading. “I’m not a religious person but I’m a great believer in love, compassion, generosity and charity. I hate people who think they’re so special and treat others with disregard or contempt,” he stressed.

“I love my friends here. I love the passion people have. I love their friendliness and concern. I love the fact that a simple smile works wonders. I even love the terrible traffic – it gives me something to complain about. I love the opportunities,” he added.

Certainly, as days progress, we will know more about Shaun and according to him, he’ll be happier to meet all his employees. He ended the interview by saying that he dreams of seeing a “one OSRP” picture and he described this vision as a company where all strokes fall in sync. As much as possible, he said as someone taking the lead for the whole Manila team, he would love to shake into every individual a strong brand of enthusiasm and pride so that everyone will have a sense of unity and direction.

“I want to see a better picture of wholeness, of unity. Yes, I can see it now and want to develop it more. That everyone will not come to work plainly thinking that I am working for onSale, for MacMall, for Sales….I want people to come in with a mindset that ‘I am working for OSRP’…I want that,” Shaun said.

Yes, he is right. And we can tell Shaun that the picture of unity he has in mind is very much like the OSRP that he is leading today; a collection of disparate elements that in a vista forms a beautiful, coherent whole.

Stiv the Pedestrian

(an old entry)

After taking a lungful of polluted air, with a stronger brand of conviction I never had in my life, I crossed EDSA all by myself for the first time–call it an act of SUICIDE for someone whose daily metal accessories are not bangles or earrings but hehe, crutches. It was May 04.

Putting on the needed amount of courage was not chicken. It required me to consult my heart and soul and of course…my survival needs. I thought, if I won’t brave EDSA and be a beautiful pedestrian, I won’t reach the office  and that means no work for me. No work, no pay…no money to buy myself my daily dose of coffee. (So there goes my source of motivation…hehehe!).

Since I came here in Manila , I have crossed many lanes (read: fears) that I never thought I would learn to overcome. Crossing streets, for one. Using escalator is also another story. But the biggest story of course is deciding to settle here for work.

The decision itself is a major crossover, to think that there is plenty to fear here. I thought I wouldn’t make it. During my first week here, when all my housemates weren’t home, I would find myself in tears for mixed reasons like I missed everybody, I dreaded the next sunrise because I would have to cross EDSA or I would need to take the bus again, and I felt uncomfortable when people cast surveying stares while I crossed the streets…oh God, all these and more gave me the creeps.

It was like forcibly, the state of being alone that I forever embraced started to kick me out of its base and sent signals that the time has come for me to face my fears and enjoy the battlefield. After learning the basics (and still mastering the ropes), I believe today I am having fun!

Crossing Fear Avenue did not only make me reach the Unafraid Shore . It also paved the aisle for me to get to Life’s Boulevard and there I saw more things in a vista and guess what, one day, I hope to make it there too.

It’s like, so what if I have to cross the streets? In this world of great compromise and long roads, there is nothing to fear as long as you’re on the right path. The shortest distance between two poles is a straight line, right? In my heart I know that always God prepares the best timing and He has designed for me an avenue with effective traffic lights that will tell me when to take the pedestrian lane.

Hearsays

Rumors that spread around our sphere everyday are signs that we are doing great. More, the right thing. They signal that our personal and professional decisions of going against our limitations or weaknesses are worth taking.

Man, it is just sad that rumors exist because we cannot always expect that everybody will be pleased about the goings on in our life. Out there, I mean, everywhere there is a corner that houses persons who are full of insecurities. The sadder part here is that, they will not remain that way. And by allowing themselves to be engulfed by envy and jealousy–whether or not you are aware that they are your enemies–your happy hours are numbered. That is the saddest.

You will not understand why suddenly they become offensive and you have no way to get away with it. It is either you allow yourself to be hurt or you fight back. The latter of course is pathetic. Highest patience and sympathy should go to people who cannot accept the fact that there are some things where you dictate the field and there they have no say.

They think that their best weapon to drag you down is through their winged offenses. Humans as we are, gossips tend to arrest a decoder instantly because these are long on rhetoric. But these will never bring proof to the surface. These are always short on evidence. Plus people behind it will not show their faces. One sign of lack of substance and verity.

Usually a mixture of truth and untruth, fabricated stories fly around, passed around by word of mouth and BOOM! Suddenly, you are at fault. Suddenly you are bad. You will never know what’s cooking up to poison the minds of the very people whose confidence go out to you. What is left to do is to fight for your own stead. In times like this, keeping your cool is the most potent defense. Who is stabbing you from behind is always a question. It is like your worst nightmare coming true.

How come in a competitive world–invaded by learned people–gossip secures itself as the currency? Worse, it could happen within your industry or your company. Worst, unbelievable too, is that there are some people your senior who count gossips, rumors, or hearsays as facts. They believe instantly without giving the rumor’s subject the chance to disprove them. I know some people that opted to leave their posts because of hearsays. Driven perhaps by lack of nerve to stay or they cannot afford anymore to stand the unhealthy atmosphere.

This note reminds me of them, inspired by these people actually.

Talk, especially of the anonymous kind, is forever cheap. The most notorious form of it is hearsay. It follows a format that always targets a destroying end. Men responsible for this evil act want you to feel that you have invisible enemies around and you are not safe from their tongues. But pay them no attention. Expect that people behind the wheels of manipulation will never shed the cloak of anonymity and will never have the nerve to come forward.

That qualifies them not as worthy opponents.
